Granite Ridge Kennels is focused on producing genuine gun dogs that will be
prized in the field because of their strong noses, level headedness and
astounding drive, and will be loved at home because of their gentle nature.
We have hand selected our labs from eight of the finest bloodlines in the
United States and Europe. We breed real shooting dogs for serious gunners.
Granite Ridge Kennels is not in the field trial game or the conformation
show business, nor are we a training operation, but we do guarantee that
every lab used in our breeding has been evaluated by and undergone training
by a professional trainer. Unfortunately, in some instances, retriever
training has become nothing more than obedience training. Dogs are drilled
to respond in artificial situations and settings with minimal exposure to
live or dead birds and no actual hunting experience. So what sets Granite
Ridge Kennels apart from other Labrador retriever breeding operations (whose
brood stock may never have been trained or was mechanically trained for
artificial competitive events) is the guarantee that before any sire or dam
is considered for breeding, it has been professionally trained in the field,
has had wild bird experience, and has proven itself to be a great hunting
and companion dog.
We combine our training with actual hunting for upland birds because both
Pete and Kathie are avid bird hunters, and the pros we contract with to
train our dogs are real hunters. Literally hundreds of native game birds are
shot while training our labs during open seasons in a half dozen states and
Canada. More than a thousand additional propagated game birds have been
hunted at commercial game farms during their off-season training
It’s all about developing pleasing hunting labs which can be trained by
dedicated hunters who wish to turn out a home trained dog with reasonable
time and effort. This inherited “easy to train” quality in our pups also
results in money saved when sportsmen who want to hunt with a good dog but
are too busy to train, turn our pups over to a professional trainer. Our
proven gun dog breeding is aimed at any hard hunter who requires a reliable
bird flusher and fetcher, enjoys being with an intelligent and companionable
dog, and gets that warm, proud feeling when “good dog work” is noted and
praised by others among the gunning gentry.
Granite Ridge Kennels also offers started gun dogs for sale. Our started
dogs are raised and nurtured in our home and in our kennel. They are house
trained and field trained. If you are interested in a started dog, give us a
call. If we don’t have one available, we can get one started for you.
